Construcția văzută prin ochii femeii

Arhitectură și Femei

Our world is the most significant creation. The purpose of its existence is to serve as home to all kinds of creatures that have been evolving since the beginning. Human beings have always put their mark on the world, either through prehistoric drawings found in caves, pyramids that amaze the entire scientific field, small ancient villages in the woods, or buildings so tall that they seem to touch the clouds. It has always been a matter of “Leave it here so that the world will know”.

In today’s society terms, men and women are becoming more and more separated, trying to evolve individually to prove their best natural characteristics that differentiate them from one another. The most exciting part is that they both complement each other. But how could they work together to achieve something greater than they would have created personally? History has taught us what most men did. They hunted, went to war, built and rebuilt the places that they have destroyed. They had the power. You may be wondering where the women in this big universal story are. Why are there so few in the archives of the world?

Veiled in mystery and finesse, women have a strong artistic sense to create. They have always been mothers, princesses, housemaids, the support that men needed. In the past, their activities were reduced to pleasing other people’s needs and taking care of their children. But now, women can do whatever they want. Even though they can be engineers, doctors, teachers, scientists, designers, or architects, they still have a lot to face when acknowledging their successes because men mainly conquer the market.

Walking through the narrow streets of London as an international student, I cannot stop taking a picture every two to three steps, thinking I have to show my friends and family what I have seen. As you are into the very heart of the city, enormous buildings surround you, feeling like giants that are going to rest their bodies on the crowd of people that are heading to the underground station. The vast windows reflect the whole city, seeming so thin that they might break from a sharp pencil. Malls and offices that bring a strong feeling of innovation in the era of technology mirror into them the touch of old architecture from the courts or majestic palaces across the street. Outer London has another vibe. From a distance, the tiny houses stay below the horizon line. They look glued together like in a hug that goes forever. Built-in a Victorian, Georgian or Edwardian style, most of them still have the original design. Fine details were created on top of the entrance door, relatively large front windows in contrast with small ones from the first floor. Plants that twine around the walls find their way high up on the roof. As I am heading to one of the many natural parks surrounding the area, I am attracted by the beautiful flowers from the gardens that show the owner’s care and interest in beauty.

England’s architecture is breathtaking and unique, but how much influence had women had on it? They are constantly adapting to the challenges brought by the 21st century, and I hope that their impact will be more profound in the near future of architecture.
